About Roanoke, IN

Roanoke is a town in Jackson Township, part of Huntington County, IN. A town council governs it, had its own local licensed television station WPTA for many years. Nearly 2000 people live in the town.

It was a prosperous commercial center in the mid-19th century after being one of the big hunting and fishing grounds of the Miami Indians for a long time. The town truly started in 1848, soon after the Wabash and Erie Canal was built through that territory. The town became an important shipping point in the region after the canal was completed, providing a huge source of supplies for neighboring towns in Allen, Huntington, and Whitley counties. The town was named after Roanoke, Virginia.

The Roanoke Area Heritage Center & Historical Museum was founded alongside the Wabash and Erie Canals, retaining an old-fashioned appeal. Locals founded it to promote local history, including a WWII glider pilot, an Indy 500 Driver, and more. Roanoke Park features two baseball diamonds, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a fully equipped playground, and plenty of places to walk and hike.
